Chianti Classico Riserva Kirkland 2021 Review

If you're a fan of Kirkland wines, you know they deliver quality at an affordable price point. We are taking a look at their latest offering, the Chianti Classico Riserva 2021 - is it a step above the rest?

This deep ruby red hails from the renowned Chianti Classico region of Tuscany, where the strict DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) regulations ensure only the finest Sangiovese grapes make it into the bottle. This wine is aged for a minimum of 24 months (with at least 3 months in oak barrels).

Review

On the nose, the Kirkland Chianti Classico Riserva 2021 offers classic aromas of tart cherry, dried herbs, and a hint of leather.

Taking a sip, the medium-bodied Sangiovese hits the palate with flavors of sour cherry and cranberry. There are also touches of dried Italian herbs and dusty earth. The flavors lack a real vibrancy or punch of concentrated fruit, however the wine is still enjoyable.

The tannins are fairly grippy, providing a good backbone. However, the finish is a bit shorter than expected for a Riserva, with the dry tannins and hints of tobacco quickly fading.

In summary, the Kirkland Chianti Classico Riserva 2021 is a solid, well-made wine that ticks the boxes for the DOCG designation. It's an easy-drinking, food-friendly option. But it doesn't quite reach transcendent levels, lacking the depth, complexity, and lingering finish of top-tier Chianti Classico Riservas. Given the great price of $8.99, this is a respectable 3.5 out of 5 grapes; recommended.
