Visiting Daou Vineyards in Paso Robles

My wife and I had the opportunity to visit Daou Vineyards this past summer on a trip to Paso Robles wine country. Of all the wineries in the region, Daou's hilltop setting is truly spectacular—perched high above the valley with stunning views seemingly across the entire area. It's easy to see why Daou is considered one of the crown jewels of Paso Robles.

Wine tastings at $50 per person are certainly at the high end. We enjoyed sampling both library and current releases paired with appetizers on their shaded patio overlooking the vineyards below. The photos here don't do the views from Daou's scenic grounds justice. It made for an unforgettable experience.

Review

Now to one of the wines that can easily be enjoyed without visiting the winery - their 2021 Daou Cabernet Sauvignon. This Cabernet is widely distributed, commonly found on shelves at major retailers like Costco for around $20. At that price point, it represents great quality for a Paso Robles Cabernet.

In the glass, the wine presents an opaque purple color. The aroma is textbook Cabernet, with bright cassis, blackberry and cherry fruit aromas intermingled with hints of cocoa, graphite and dried herbs. On the palate, the fruit flavors are deep and concentrated, showing layers of black fruit preserves, black olives and chocolate-covered espresso beans. The tannins are ripe yet firm, supporting the full-bodied profile through a long, lingering finish.

At just 14.5% alcohol, Daou achieves outstanding density and richness without feeling hot or heavy. Careful vineyard management and winemaking allow the terroir contributions from their estate vineyards to really shine through. While approachable now, this wine has the density and structure to reward short-term cellaring of 3-5 years.

The 2021 vintage in Paso Robles produced warm, even ripening conditions leading to concentrated Cabernets true to the region's style. This wine shows why Daou remains near the top of the Paso Robles Cabernet game year after year. It's a strong expression of the variety from one of California's most exciting Cabernet regions. 4.5/5, and would definitely buy again.
