J Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 Review: Wonderful!

We've always been impressed by the Cabernets that J. Lohr creates. They have a real knack for crafting bold, balanced wines from their California estates. We had opportunity to visit J Lohr at their location in Paso Robles in the summer of 2023, and came away very impressed with the operation. We were excited to crack open a bottle of their 2020 bottling to see what it was all about.

Review

Right off the bat, we were hit with intense aromas jumping out of the glass. Lush blackberry, wrapped around a creamy vanilla bean and buttery background. Taking a sip, this wine coated our entire mouths in a silky smooth texture. Flavors of dark chocolate, mocha and plum detected in a really rich yet balanced way. Fine-grained tannins provided just the right amount of structure. With some air, mocha and espresso flavors intensified. Plus, that finish just wouldn't quit! It went on and on with an incredibly buttery-smooth texture.

Honestly, this Cab could be enjoyed right now or cellar it for 10 years to let more secondary characteristics develop. We picked up our bottle from Costco for 11.99, however this can be found in most major wine retailers.

Precision, depth and balance - this J. Lohr Cabernet had it all.

With its incredible depth of flavor and supple, velvety mouthfeel, it totally blew us away. Easy 5 out of 5 stars and a true BRW star. J. Lohr seriously knows how to craft a world-class wine.
