Review

Popping open a bottle, I was greeted by inviting aromas of ripe plum and black cherry, with subtle hints of vanilla and spice. On the palate, this Merlot delivers exactly what the nose promises - smooth, juicy flavors of dark fruit with a touch of mocha and a whisper of oak. It's medium-bodied and well-balanced, with just enough acidity to keep it lively.

While not overly complex, the J. Lohr Merlot unfolds nicely in the glass. With a little bit of air, those secondary flavors of cedar and tobacco start to emerge, adding a layer of depth. The tannins are present but well-integrated, providing structure without being harsh. The finish is smooth and lingering, leaving a pleasant taste of dark fruit and spice.

For the price, the J. Lohr Merlot 2021 is a fantastic value. It's an easy-drinking, crowd-pleasing red that's perfect for casual gatherings, weeknight dinners, or simply unwinding after a long day. It's also incredibly food-friendly, pairing well with everything from grilled meats to pasta dishes to pizza. We purchased this at Sam's Club for $13.48 in Flagstaff AZ.

Overall

4.0 out of 5 stars. A solid and satisfying Merlot that over-delivers for the price. Highly recommended for anyone looking for an easy-drinking and affordable red wine.
