Mercer Bros Red Blend - Bleh..

Avoid wasting your time and money on Mercer Bros nonvintage Red Blend - a dull effort devoid of richness or complexity. I had to double check the label to confirm this was indeed a red blend. Cheap, but it simply wasn't good.

The Mercer family has been growing wine grapes in Washington State's Horse Heaven Hills since 1972, initially focused on Cabernet Sauvignon varietals well suited to the area's rich soils and arid climate. They claim over nearly 50 years of viticulture experience.

Review

The characterless nose only emits vague red fruit tones of watered down cherry juice. Swirling unveils no further aromas to spoil expectations of the hollow palate to come.

Thin flavors of sour red apple and bitter unripe cherry water inefficiently coat the mouth. Medium alcohol briefly appears but the abrasive finish finds tannins dominating instead - certainly not where a smooth blend should conclude.

Frankly, boring and unpleasant through the entire expression, this offers little richness or appeal. Perhaps we should have decanted, as the flavor did improve a small amount as the wine sat out for a bit. $10 is still $9 too much to spend on this drain pour poised to disappoint even easygoing palates. We rate it an 1.5 out of 5 grapes - avoid.
